“Relationship Marketing Specialist” Mari Smith posted on her site that as of March 1, 2010, Facebook apps will no longer be able to send users notifications but you can opt-in so the application/developers can contact you directly. Each application will have to be approved separately.
Mashable also has a posted about this change and stated that “developers can now choose from a number of methods to communicate changes or updates to users. Facebook
recommends using either counters, dashboard news notices or sending users e-mail messages (assuming they have agreed to e-mail opt-ins).”
So does this mean there is an end to the Farmville notices?!?! (Thank heavens).
It’s interesting that Facebook would cease notifications because applications like Farmville encourages more time spent on their site and leverage the viral nature that gives Social Media its power.
If you use applications like these, will you give them your email address or will you move on?
