Today’s eMarketer newsletter outlined some statistics about how small businesses are using or perceive the value of social media.
According to the “Small Business Marketing Forecast 2010” from Ad-ology, lead generation is the biggest benefit of social networking for US small businesses. Businesses are also using social media for keeping up with trends and monitoring word-of-mouth.

It’s surprising to see that businesses still haven’t seen the full value of social media.
While Facebook is the most beneficial (and most used) site, over 53% still do not use this (free) resource for business.
With over 350 million people connecting on Facebook, it seems counter-intuitive for businesses not to have some sort of presence.
Within this article, small businesses claim that one of the biggest obstacles with social networking is lack of knowledge. There also is a misconception that “customers do not use social networks” (31%). Again, if millions of people are using social media to connect, and big businesses such as Best Buy, Zappos, Starbucks, McDonalds etc are all climbing on the bandwagon then obviously there IS value to learn more and connect with customers.
