From Ashton Kutcher versus CNN, to the Hudson Plane crash to the Iranian elections: Twitter certainly has been a “buzz” word.
It’s interesting to note that a new study by RJMetrics found that by year-end Twitter had just over 75 million user accounts. New user growth peaked last July at 7.8 million new users per month, and has dropped significantly and steadily since then.
With 75 million users it’s still a valuable part of the overall marketing mix, though of those 75 million, 25% of accounts have no followers and about 40% of accounts have never sent a single Tweet. The average user has 27 followers (down from 42 in August 2009)
Only about 17% of users tweeted in December (which was an all-time-low) and there truly is only about 10 million to 15 million active tweeters.
It will be interesting to see if Twitter fades away as new technological platforms enter the picture, or whether Twitter has anything up their sleeve to keep users engaged.
