Think before you post anything online: An Open Letter.
Open letter to anyone who uses Social Media.
As a trainer of Social Media, if often tell students and businesses: “don’t publish anything online that you wouldn’t want to see on a billboard”.
How often do you see people who post inappropriate pictures?
Or comment and “like” inappropriate Facebook pages so it ends up in your “feed”?
How many times a week do you see passive aggressive threats and rants directed toward one person and shared with hundreds of followers?
We must remember there are people on the other side of our computers.
People who (right or wrong) judge who you are based on the information you share about yourself.
We should be using social media to extend community support: to help each other, and share positive information that helps people.
Having my own identity compromised, I’m reluctant to share too much personal information. I no longer check in on Foursquare or Facebook to leave a digital footprint of my daily pattern.
I have removed pictures of my child to protect them from potential predators.
I do my best to keep personal correspondence private.
We all have to remember that even when we think our settings are private that ” what goes on the Internet, stays on the Internet”.
We think before we speak, we must THINK before we post anything online.
