The Easiest Way To Stay Top-Of-Mind and Sell More: Status Updates
Status updates are a non-intrusive way of publishing great information to your target audience without overtly “selling” to them.
When you publish great information that is relevant, timely and solves your potential client’s problems, then you imply that you are the perfect fit for their needs.
But your time is limited, and you want to work IN your business, not ON your business.
Here are some two top tips on how to make this process VERY easy:
Tip 1: Leverage aggregated, curated content
Sharing content that someone else has already published is a great time saver.
LinkedIn has a wonderful content aggregator called LinkedIn Today.
It’s featured directly below your status update area and contains high-quality posts that are optimized based on the popularity of the content.
Essentially, the more views, shares and engagement an article gets, the higher it’s ranked and more likely it will appear in the LinkedIn Today recommendation area.

ACTION ITEM: For the articles you think your audience will find the most interesting, simply share it. Update your status with a simple comment to entice people to click, such as “This article is a great read because…..” or “I completely agree with this article about ….. what are your thoughts?”
You may be putting your question out into the “ether” of your audience, but your goal is to try and get engagement or be thought-provoking; even if they don’t respond.
- 60% of members are interested in industry insights
- 53% are interested in company news
- 43% are interested in new products and services
Tip 2: Create your OWN content
One of the best ways to position yourself as an expert is for you to write your thoughts, tips, advice, perspective.
You may think it’s all been said before, but no one knows what YOU know from your perspective.
Think about what your audience wants to hear. What problems can you solve? Can you help with the decision-making process as they are going through your sales funnel from generating awareness through to converting the sale (and getting referrals).
If you don’t have the time to write blog posts, think about how you can share a tip in under 140 characters!
Some top tips for publishing GREAT status updates:
- Keep it brief
- Time it to when your audience is most likely online
(for business people on LinkedIn, that is 7 a.m – 9 a.m. or 5 p.m – 6 p.m.) - Post regularly (2 to 3 times per week)
- Work with your marketing team to align with the company’s messaging and initiatives. Ask them to provide you with content
ACTION ITEM: Write down 5 keywords, pain points or industry news you could share – right now.
When would be the ideal time to publish information? Is there a certain time of year that will be best suited for your tips/advice?
Think about your content from your business objectives: Does it align with your mission, vision, goals?
Now it’s YOUR Turn:
