According to research from Edelman (via eMarketer),   47% of US Internet users were willing to watch ads in exchange for free entertainment and only 13% were willing to give up private information.

And while this article outlines that Facebook and other social networking sites are considered to be a form of entertainment, the majority of people are concerned that websites are collecting too much personal information.

Marketers have to be very careful not to erode the trust of the consumer. As we (should) all know by now, the power has shifted into the hands of the consumer. We now have more resources, are able to access more content and therefore have more choices.

Do you think Facebook will be able to redeem themselves with tonight’s announcement? If not, what would they have to do to earn your trust back (if you’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’?)
