How To Use Social Media Properly

By Leslie Hughes | January 30, 2013

Properly. An interesting term.

According to Miriam Webster

  • very good
  • strictly accurate

How do you use Social Media properly?

Well, what does “social” mean to you?

Is it adding people you don’t know to your Rolodex? Is it selling to someone without having a conversation first?

Nope.

Social Media is all about two-way communication; actually TALKING to a person.

It’s about building relationships.

It’s about getting your prospects to know, like and trust you.

It’s word-of-mouth.

We may not be literally talking but we are communicating with people.

Just because you can’t see facial expressions & non-verbal behavior, doesn’t mean there isn’t a person on the other side of the computer. (Wanna share this thought? Click here to tweet it)

I must caution that it’s not JUST about communicating. Setting up a proper strategy is always very important.

Set up what it is you want to achieve, align it with the overarching marketing plan; align it with your mission, vision, and goals.

Measure against those key performance indicators.

But most important of all….LISTEN. Respond. Repeat.

Just like in real life!

If you are engaging with your prospect in real life, you cultivate a relationship. Help them solve problems. Ease their “pain”.

Remember at all times that the focus isn’t on you and your business. It’s on THEM – the customer.
