As you may have heard, Facebook is in some “hot water” (again!) for the new “Instant Personalization” program.
Contrary to the opt-in requirement as outlined in Canada’s Privacy Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Facebook automatically opts-in their 400 million members to various changes on their site.
Mark Zuckerberg said, in his April 21 keynote, that Facebook is, “building towards a web where the default is social.”
As a marketer, I’m interested to see how the program will change the dynamics of the Internet as we know it.
As an individual, the “instant personalization” program makes me quite nervous.
So, fellow Facebook users, I share with you some of the tips on how to change your Privacy Settings.

If you only want SOME of your friends to see this information (i.e. keeping business friends separate from personal friends), then be sure to segment your Friends into lists and set your privacy options to “Custom”. If you haven’t done this yet, there is a brief tutorial on the PUNCH!media blog here:
http://punchmedia.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/to-friend-or-not-to-friend-the-blurred-relationship-between-friends-and-business/
And while you’re in the Privacy Settings area, also be sure to check out ALL of the information you’ve automatically been opted in to share.
Such as: “What your friends can share about you.”

I’ve increasingly been anti Facebook, not having logged into it since January, until yesterday. I was surprised by the amount of new changes that has happened. What has been keeping me away from my Facebook account was I felt that I have lost control of my profile. There were too many options and links, new features, and the environment increasingly unfamiliar. What I needed were small, usable tips that adds value to my time while on Facebook. Thanks for this privacy settings tip (thumbs up!).
