How to personalize your LinkedIn connection requests each and EVERY time.

When inviting members to connect on LinkedIn, always add a personalized message to the recipient.

This way, the person you’re trying to connect with will be more likely to accept your request and it helps to frame why you want to connect with them in the first place.

Here’s how:

  1. Navigate to the profile of the member you’d like to connect with. 
  2. Click the Connect button.
  3. Click Add a note.
  4. Add your personalized message in the text field.
  5. Click Send invitation.

Here’s where it gets tricky. If you click the “Connect” button from your phone, it often sends the invitation request without letting you personalize it.

How to personalize your connection request via Smartphone.

To add a personalized message to an invitation using iOS

  1. Navigate to the profile of the member you’d like to connect with.
  2. Click on the three dots  … next to the “Message” button.
  3. Click on Personalize Invite.
  4. Enter your personalized invitation message.
  5. Click Send Invitation.

To add a personalized message using Android

  1. Navigate to the profile of the member you’d like to connect with.
  2. Click the down arrow button in the top section of the member’s profile.
  3. Click Personalize invite.
  4. Enter your personalized invitation message.
  5. Click Send.

What are some easy icebreakers?

  • Summary: Do they explain their role? What they do?
  • Articles & Activities: What are they writing about or sharing
  • Education: Any commonalities with Alumni?
  • Past Experience: Do you know much about their past company or role?
  • Volunteer Experience or Organizations: Do you know anything about the organization?
  • Projects or Publications: Read up on what they’ve published or been featured in.
