Hit Me With Your Best Shot….Book review for Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook / Gary Vaynerchuk
If you’ve attended any of my seminars about how Social Media and more specifically, how to leverage videos to connect with your target audience, you’ve heard me talk about Gary Vaynerchuk.
He’s taken his family wine business from $3 million to $45 million through e-commerce and his video podcasts called Wine Library TV
His fast talking, shoot-from-the-hip, passionate and down-to-earth nature resonates with audiences everywhere. He is the antithesis of a snobbish sommelier and makes wine tasting both fun and less intimidating.
The episode I always talk about, is the one where Gary explores “What Wine Pairs With Cereal?” . (Love the “out of the box” thinking – [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][insert rimshot here])
Gary’s books “Crush It” and “The Thank You Economy” are extraordinarily helpful, insightful (and wildly successful) and his new book “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” is a MUST-read for all marketers.
Like a drama-filled, page-turner I couldn’t put it down.
{Full disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book by VaynerMedia}
Lots of best practices of businesses who get “social” right and plenty of “do NOT dos”; this is a very practical guide that covers the popular channels of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, and more.
The Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook boxing metaphor (which works really well with PUNCH!media, don’t you think?), translates into “Give, give, give….ask”.
In this information-based economy where people can Google anything, your audience doesn’t want to be SOLD; they want to be entertained, educated and engaged. Give to get.
“There is no sale without the story; no knockout without the setup.” ~ Gary Vaynerchuk
As I’ve been preaching, ONE size does not fit all. Gary showcases how each channel is different and why just pushing one message to all the different platforms doesn’t work.
More importantly, he talks how to craft the right message and effectively tell the right story to the right audience. Content is important but the CONTEXT in which it’s received carries even more weight and importance.
As a small example: hashtags on Facebook don’t work well but are very important on Twitter and Instagram.
I love how each chapter/channel has a summary of the top questions you can ask yourself about that channel’s content. A very useful how-to checklist that marketers could review before they deploy their messages.
Use the channels to build relationships and connect with your audience. And, when the time is right, you can land the “right hook”:
“Today’s perfect right hooks always include three characteristics:
1. They make the call to action simple and easy to understand.
2. They are perfectly crafted for mobile, as well as all digital devices.
3. They respect the nuances of the social network for which you are making the content.”

Social Media is overwhelming and ever-changing; it’s tough to stay on top of it all. This book boils down the essence of what you need to know and is a helpful guide to keep you focused on the (heavyweight) prize = attracting and converting clients/customers.
I plan on purchasing several copies of Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook for my clients and will encourage all my students to read it.
YOUR TURN
I’d love to know any best practices you’ve seen out there…who is YOUR favourite brand when it comes to doing “social” right?[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

I learned a ton from Crush It and The Thank You Economy.
I haven’t read Jab Jab Jab Right Hook yet.
Thanks Leslie
