Mobile Is On The Rise: Coupon Biz Set to Hit $57 Billion

By Leslie Hughes | April 22, 2010

With the recent release and popularity of the iPad, along with 91% of Americans who use cell phones, it’s no wonder that a study from The Mobile Marketing Association in partnership with Luth Research, says that couponing is expected to rise to $57 Billion in 2014.

Courtesy of Mediapost: “While 10% of cell phone owners (9.1% of the total) use a mobile location-based service at least once a week, the number is much higher for iPhone owners: 63%. In terms of age cohorts, adults ages 25-34 were the heaviest users of location-based services, with 22% doing so weekly.

Most respondents said that they used location-based services to locate nearby ‘points of interest, shops, or services.’

Roughly half of those who noticed ads during their use of a location-based mobile service took some kind of action.”

Get ahead of the social media game by ensuring your business is accessible via geotagging. Essentially, making sure your location can be found on maps and sites. Leverage opportunities to reward people who are logging in and messaging their friends about your location.

Couponing is just one way to get into the groove. I’ve seen examples of “scavenger hunts” or “fun things to do in the neighbourhood”.  Cross promote a business nearby. Encourage your clients to come back for more.

Here are the frontrunners in the GPS-enabled, location-based social network services:

  • Foursquare
  • Gowalla
  • Yelp

Have you used any of these sites to tap into Social Networking? We’d love to hear what you love or don’t love about this emerging trend.
