IFTTT

One of the best things about Twitter is that I’ve been fortunate to meet all sorts of amazing new people. The following guest post is from Wendy Morelli (aka @AppHipMom). She shares some great insight about a tool I’ve been asked about (but haven’t used yet).

Business Owners Work Smarter with IFTTT

Put the Internet to work for you. That’s the simple slogan behind IFTTT (If This Then That), a powerful online tool that automates simple, everyday tasks so that you have more time to do the things that really matter.

No one appreciates better the value of time than small businesses, where often, the work of many rests upon one. After all, it’s not necessarily about working harder, but smarter, right?

IFTTT is like having an Executive Assistant, without having to tack on the added expenditure. IFTTT can track incoming orders, back up photos to Dropbox or even send an alert to colleagues that your plane has landed. It’s incredibly versatile.

The service works by creating recipes that connect over 70 web channels such as Dropbox, Evernote, WordPress, Twitter, Instagram, Buffer, LinkedIn, Android, iOS and Facebook with one simple command – “If This Then That” where “this” (trigger) and “that” (action) are replaced by the corresponding channels. “If Instagram then Dropbox” is one such example of a recipe that will save Instagram photos to Dropbox.

If you’re looking for immediate recipes, look to the IFTTT website to browse recipes others have created, or if you prefer, create your own with the numerous channels available to you.

Here are just a few examples of business uses for IFTTT:

  • Keep track of business expenses using Gmail & Google Drive
  • Save Gmail attachments to Google Drive or Dropbox
  • Archive WordPress blog posts onto Google Drive
  • Share WordPress post to Facebook Page
  • Backup iOS Contacts to Google Drive
  • Mute your Android device when you arrive at work and set to vibrate
  • Post a link to Facebook and have it tweeted automatically
  • Organize LinkedIn Connections to Google Drive spreadsheet
  • Save tweets to spreadsheet
  • Track incoming orders to Google spreadsheet
  • Send happy birthday email to clients
  • Track mileage to spreadsheet via text message
  • Track specific keyword or hashtag on Twitter to spreadsheet

IFTTT is web-based, with free apps for iOS and Android devices. With the many channels IFTTT has to offer, the possibilities for automation are endless.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! DO YOU HAVE ANY IFTTT TIPS YOU CAN SHARE TO PAY IT FORWARD? SHARE YOUR INSIGHTS IN THE FIELDS BELOW.

Who is Wendy Morelli?

Wendy, aka AppHipMom, loves her 2 kids and her iPhone, not necessarily always in that order. She is an app obsessed mom who loves everything tech and is (unfortunately) old enough to remember the brick Motorola cell phone and the Commodore computer. If you have tweens, be sure to check out Wendy’s other site, Tweenhood.ca, an online magazine for parents with kid’s ages 8-12.
