The worst possible mistake a business can make on their website

By Leslie Hughes | August 17, 2011

It’s Q & A Wednesday with another great response from Richard at CMS Web Solutions.

We ask Richard because we like and trust him and want our online presence to be as strong as it can be. We asked:

What’s the worst possible mistake a business can make on their website?

There are many mistakes companies make, but the biggest general “big picture” mistake is focusing on themselves rather than the visitor to the website.

That might sound obvious, but it’s not done.

Why?

Designers & businesses sometimes get too caught up on the look of a site, rather than content and flow. It’s very business-centred rather than visitor-centred.

Remember people skim. Write your content like an inverted pyramid, putting the most important information in the first 2 lines.

Search engines put people in the middle of a website. Ensure you have a “home” button as it’s like a touch stone for visitors. Don’t let them get lost in your website.

After launching a website monitor what visitors are actually doing. Then adjust it to make it easier to find what they are looking for. Have a few hyperlinks in your content to flow visitors to important pages within your website.

Speak to people as though you are speaking to one person. Remember, there is usually only one person at a time looking at your site.

If possible work contact information it into the design so it’s on every page. Make it effortless to find information on your website.
Awesome advice!
What do YOU think is the worst possible mistake a business can make on their website?
