On January 24, 2013, Twitter announced the launch of Vine:

“a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity.”

It’s a free app available to iPhone users.

The idea of sharing ideas under 140 characters, was an interesting one.

On Twitter, there is a LOT of volume of information shared quickly, but messages have to be kept short & sweet.

Twitter junkies (like myself) have found this channel to be an online “water cooler” where we’ve:

  • learned from the people we follow (a great resource for info)
  • developed new business relationships/friendships
  • acquired new clients from word-of-mouth
  • positioned ourselves as experts
  • provided customer service
  • engaged with brands
  • (and much more….)

So will Vine be the “new Twitter”?

With 2013 being touted as “the year of video” it will be interesting to see how this idea rolls out and whether it will be useful or not.

I’ve been playing around with video a bit more this year (www.youtube.com/punchmediatv and www.youtube.com/punchmediadotca) to develop tutorials but I’ve found that creating videos is much more time consuming than writing a blog. I spend much more time editing than I do actually filming.

Video is a terrific way to extend your brand presence and develop deeper relationships with your audience. They help to build the “know, like and trust” factor.

While I realize that brevity is very important in our current landscape of information overload, I wonder if Vine will be used to help expand our knowledge and learning or just add to the cacophony of noise that exists in Social Media today?

I’ll be curious to see if and how Vine will be used for business.

P.S. In the ongoing “war” for eyeballs, only ONE day after the launch, Facebook has already blocked users from finding people.
