Located directly below your name is an area that has some really valuable real-estate — Your Headline.
By default, LinkedIn will allow you to opt-in to feature your current position in this field. I’m quite certain you have a lot more to offer than simply your title.
You have an opportunity to optimize this space to tell a short, 120-character story about what you do and showcase the target audience that you help.
I wear many hats, but my primary title is “Principal at PUNCH!media”. This doesn’t tell anybody anything, does it? Instead, I use many keywords including “LinkedIn & Social Selling Corporate Trainer • LinkedIn Profile Writer • Professor of Social Media” to let people know how I can help them.
Now you give it a try. Choose one of the following or modify the copy to fit with your role and organization. Remember, you only have 120 characters, so you may have to be creative to keep it short & sweet.
Option #1: (Your Title) at (Company). Specializing in helping (target audience) with (solutions you provide).
Option #2: (Area of Expertise) Specialist. Helping (target audience) achieve (results).
Option #3: If you’re like me, and wear many hats, you can simply include keywords. I use a simple bullet to separate the keywords. You can simply cut & paste the one used here –> ·
PRO TIP: Write your copy in a WORD document first so you can ensure you stay within the limit of the 120-keyword count.
If you REALLY can’t pare it down to 120 characters, you can add extra characters on your smartphone. The hiccup to this hack happens if you ever want to make a change to your headline on a desktop. You’ll need to edit the headline back to the 120 characters and then re-add the additional copy on your smartphone.
Make a strong first impression when people happen to cross paths with you on LinkedIn. It may generate new business for you!
