Networking_on_LinkedIn

Learning how to network and connect with people on LinkedIn, is quite straightforward: how would you connect with people in real life?

Whether you’re a job seeker, a business owner, or a professional looking to expand your network, LinkedIn can be a valuable tool for connecting with people in your industry and building your personal brand.

We often forget that because we are connecting computer-to-computer, or device-to-device that there is another human being at the other end of that device.

The golden rule “treat others how you would like to be treated”, am I right?

  • Do YOU like to be pitched by someone who doesn’t know you?
  • Do you just hand someone a business card and walk away without finding icebreakers or commonalities?

Here are five (5) steps that will help you network and connect with people on LinkedIn:

Step #1: Do your research.

Look at the other person’s profile. Do you have a mutual connection in common? Do you work in the same industry? Did you attend the same school? What kind of commonalities can you find to “break the ice”?

Step #2: Send a personalized connection request.

Remember that there is a person at the other end of the LinkedIn connection. When connecting with them, use the icebreaker to let them know why you’re looking to connect. NEVER (and I mean EVER) start to sell them before you’ve developed a bit of rapport and have earned the right to pitch them your products/services.

Step #3: Ensure your own LinkedIn profile is up-to-date with a compelling brand story.

Whether you’re reaching out to new people, or you’re receiving inbound connection requests, people want to know: who you are, what you do, and how you help.

  • Do you have a professional photo/headshot?
  • Is your profile written for the reader?
  • Have you highlighted your unique value (how you help)?
  • Do they know how they can reach you?

Step #4: Engage.

LinkedIn isn’t a “set it and forget it” kind of platform. Social Media isn’t a monologue, it’s a dialogue. Be sure to engage in two-way conversations. Like, comment or share someone else’s post.

Step #5: Be strategic

I am a big champion of QUALITY connections over quantity connections.

Why?

“Everyone” is not a strategy.

I connect with people I know, and people I want to get to know.

I only want to read the posts from people I know, or want to get to know. Besides, the degrees of separation you have are REALLY useful when it comes to Social Selling (for more info on that subject click here).

LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for networking and connecting with people in your industry. By optimizing your profile, identifying potential connections, personalizing your connection requests, and engaging with your network, you can build a strong and valuable professional network.
